Leech Monster Lore - Livestock
The first bit in a series of planned lore bits! This one focuses on some of the roles leech monsters have in society and how their bodies are specialized for that role.
Leech monsters aren't (currently) canonically set in any world, but I do imagine they exist alongside intelligent beings that domesticate them.
Feel free to use this lore sheet in your story building!
---
Caviar leech: Leech monster meat is famously bitter and slimy and unfit for anyone's consumption, but people still found a way to eat it in the form of leech monster roe; "Leech Caviar". Caviar leeches have been selectively bred to produce the maximum amount of roe so they have a noticeably larger/swollen abdomen. These leeches are killed during the process of extracting roe.
Hide leech: These leeches are raised so that they can be pelted once they reach a profitable size, they are typically bigger and longer than your average leech. Breeding rejects usually end up in these factories as well (Saltwaters with unsatisfactory patterns, Luxury class failures, Angoras without fur etc..) Escapees from pelting factories have the scars to show for it.
Angora leech: Fur/hair is a mutation that occurs very rarely on leeches, but when it does it has a slim chance of passing down from parent to offspring. Angora leeches are almost as rare as luxury class and can be kept as pets, but people have found a way to profit off of them in more ways than the pet trade by shearing their hair/fur and producing "Leech Silk". There are a couple of notable leech silk manufacturers and all of them are considered luxurious.
(Some types of silk: Yarn silk, Fur silk, Hair silk and Elemental silk, the rarest of them all)
Guinea leech: Leeches have very flexible and highly adaptive dna. They have the potential to mutate in order to adapt to almost any environment and living conditions- so it is not a surprise some people want to explore and push what a leech is capable of to its limit. Since most societies consider untamed leech monsters vermin, experimentation is legal and wildly spread as long as the research is government approved and supervised. Guinea leeches are sickly looking with oozing pores, not to mention the various, harmful mutations they may have developed as a result of the experiments.
